Summation:
4 roles for ASEN -
Engagement,
direct action,
education and training,
lobbying.
Purpose – to radicalise climate movement (tactics and policy)
*Need for a hardline policy that can be popularised, but still use more radical tactics / direct action.
*Need to prioritise projects (under these four headings)… Where can we be the most effective??
*Agreement to aim to move environmental movement spectrum further ‘left’ (incl. ASEN)
*Initial ideas about priorities of GOALS:
- Primary goal should be engagement of students overall?? That is, to create and support MANY life long climate activists.
-Direct action and engagement on COAL – Nationwide
-Green Energy Campaigns on campus?? A more supportive role for ASEN? Creating Green Energy as a National Campaign.
-Broader Picture – Climate Education Campaign (For Students, Businesses etc – Needs to be refined…)
Policy Proposals
Emissions Reduction Target >80% by 2020 on 1990 levels (Decision to stand with Rising Tide’s position of 80% reduction in emissions by 2020 until we can decide properly our own position until SOS.)
Stop the expansion of the coal industry in Australia immediately, support a just transition for coal workers. See a fast phase out of the whole Australian Coal Industry
